Christopher Hitchens and Tony Jones 5 of 11 , 06 October 2009 10:00

Description

If there were any doubts about writer and general provocateur Christopher Hitchens ability to pull a crowd, they were entirely dispelled by the sold-out opening night of the first ever Festival of Dangerous Ideas. Presented by the Sydney Opera House and the St James Ethics Centre, the Festival brought together some of the more controversial thinkers from Australia and around the world. Hitchens’s keynote address, followed by a discussion with our own Tony Jones, was an expansion on his bestselling, “God is Not Great: Religion Poisons Everything”. Hitchens was at his polemical best, delivering a beautifully constructed speech supporting his argument that religion is not only completely implausible, but often actively destructive. Christopher Hitchens’s other books include “Letters to a Young Contrarian”, “Why Orwell Matters” and “The Missionary Position: Mother Theresa in Theory and Practice.” He also writes a regular column in “Vanity Fair”.

  4. THEREIZNOGOD says:

  5. gisanotherpint says:

Nice 1 Talladega Tom, I keep looking in anticipation of new material from Pat and agree the pair would make an impressive combination. Lets hope and pray….

  6. TalladegaTom says:

@gisanotherpint – Yes. I do. I like Pat. He is right to the point and powerfully entertaining.
It would be great fun to see Christopher and Pat debate any of the prominent vacuum worshipers.
Those two would make a great combination.
Allow a few brews and look out! :)

  7. gisanotherpint says:

Has anyone here listened much to Pat Condell??

    Testing comments

  9. goodthaigals says:

Is someone deleting my comments? Or is there a bug in youtube comments again?

  10. QwidgyboMan says:

Come now friend. A little self promotion ought to be bearable given the infancy of the channel and it’s hopefully, successful propagation. The vast majority of debate/lecture videos entail a reviewing of several seconds of the prior section anyway, so let us not be too harsh on the founders, hmm?

  11. toneshun says:

    hahah, that’s how i roll too~~ go Hitch =)

  12. brightonduder says:

“That’s what you get if you found a regime based on the family values of King Henry VIII”
    Hitch – you’re an utter genius :)

  13. jamesstephenbrown says:

While I understand this is a result of the youtube comments system, it is perhaps a reason not to take part in the inane practice of rating peoples comments. If you disagree with a comment then offer an argument, argumentation is after all not a democracy, you don’t get to vote for someone correct, thank goodness, otherwise we atheists would be screwed. I’ve got nothing against rating positively, that’s just giving kudos, but if rating negatively results in censorship, don’t do it, I say.

  14. johnclavis says:

I don’t think anybody deliberately hid the message. Messages become hidden if they receive more than a certain number of thumbs-down. A sufficient quantity of individual readers each responding honestly to the original comment by giving it a thumbs-down would quickly cause the comment to become invisible to all readers. This is an inescapable aspect of the current YouTube website commenting system.

    Hitchens rocks. Mankind is doomed.

  15. mathproof says:

    Oh no, Hitch! White socks!

  16. jamesstephenbrown says:

Why has this message been hidden. We’re not Christians after all, we don’t need to hide dissenting opinions. I’m sure Hitchens can handle a few personal attacks, and the fact that Christians need to resort to this sort of emotive nonsense is a sign of desperation, which I would think we’d want to make visible.

  17. GermanStraight1 says:

    well …
the best that HE proposes is ,
at least in my humble opinion ,
is the notion when he admits that the best any human can do is to come to term with the fact that there is NO-ONE who can honestly claim to know everything !
Least to say what a “God” wants !
I think that part was/is quit humble anyway …
I think the world would better of with people like Mr. Hitchens who ackknowlegde that they are not perfect but are open to a challenge !
Can`t say this for the Clergy !

  18. DavidGYoung says:

I wonder if he endorses that annoying intro that precedes

    every

    single

    video?

  19. Liberalviewer1 says:

Being such an egomaniac, I’m sure Mr. Hitchens knows about this channel and must approve!

  20. canti1988 says:

    its a fan channel

  21. alexvollrathsmith says:

It’s done by a fan but if you look at the channel page Mr. Hitchens himself endorses it.

  22. wonderfulkeithfloyd says:

    There’s no H in Teresa.

  23. redsoxclaret says:

just out of interest is this an official hitchens channel or one run by a fan without his knowledge?
